Manuel Sanz is one of the most important promises of Peruvian cumbia. He has been in important groups such as Grupo 5, Hermanos Yaipén, Orquesta Candela, Son de Ríos and Caribeños de Guadalupe. Currently, he is the vocalist of Amaya Hermanos, but, in parallel, he works on his project as a soloist, for which he has traveled to different areas of Peru and abroad. In this interview with La República, the Chiclayano reviews his career.
The singer Manuel Sanz, 33 years old, has more than 15 years in the world of cumbia. Everything he has achieved is thanks to his efforts. “It is the product of work, of the study of music and singing. “You improve and that’s where the results come from: joining big orchestras,” says the interpreter of ‘I promise to forget you’ and ‘He felt love’.
How did Manuel Sanz enter Group 5?
At just 17 years old, Manuel Sánchez (his real name) had the opportunity to be part of the ‘Golden Group’. At that time, the northerner did not have much experience in cumbia, since he dedicated himself to singing rancheras; Therefore, it was very difficult for him to learn the choreographies. However, he had the support of Lucho Cuéllar, Kike Paz and other colleagues. “Group 5 was my school. I sang Mexican music before joining Group 5 and I was very inexperienced, but I was given the opportunity to be part of this important orchestra and, for me, it was a blessing. Always (I am) grateful to the Yaipén family”.

Unlike others, Manuel Sanz did not have to cast to enter Group 5. He remembers that the owners of the group called him after meeting at an event in Chiclayo. When he received the call from the Yaipén, he believed that he first had to take a test to demonstrate his talent; he did not imagine that they were already thinking of hiring him. “It was a surprise. How many would like to have a school as big as Group 5! ”He says proudly.
Sanz fondly remembers his time in Grupo 5, because they did give him the opportunity to record hits in his voice, such as ‘Pástima por ti’ and ‘I promise to forget you’, song that is part of the soundtrack of the movie ‘Motor y motif’. “My songs do prevail on the platforms. “I am happy and grateful because they gave me the opportunity to record and it is my letter of introduction, it is part of my resume.”

In addition to separating from his family, Manuel Sanz had to leave his beautiful Chiclayo to perform in various cities in the country and abroad. “When I entered Group 5, I was very shy; but they gave me their trust, they were very kind. For this reason, I am always grateful to Grupo 5 because it has been a school and a family for me.”

The weather was also a challenge for Manuel. “When I went to Arequipa, I couldn’t breathe, my nose was blocked. My head hurt, blood came out of my nose. The most difficult thing was when singing because you get agitated. It was terrible! (…) When I went to La Paz (Bolivia) and sang ‘Who heals’, my heart was shaking, I couldn’t even speak. However, later you acclimatize, and the altitude no longer shocks me,” he says. “Nowadays singers are weaker, they use oxygen cylinders. I think they do it for the cameras,” adds the romantic voice of cumbia.
As is known, Manuel Sanz left Grupo 5 and music to serve as a missionary in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, better known as the Mormons. “I left everything for two years. It was hard, it was difficult, it had a spiritual purpose and I have no regrets. “It has been a great blessing.”maintains the Chiclayano, who years later had the opportunity to return to the ranks of the Monsefuana group.

Manuel Sanz divides his time between his solo project and his work in Amaya Hermanos, where he has returned after being in other groups. “He has always been part of my career. It’s my home because I feel comfortable, they give me the opportunity to produce new songs. We, as artists, have to be constantly recording to stay current.”
The 33-year-old is also happy because ‘Without blood in the veins’, A song that he recently recorded for the orchestra is already playing on the radio. “At first, it didn’t seem like it was going to work, however, it is giving very good results. People are dancing it more than in Chiclayo yet. She was surprised and she started to move, without making much of a show. We are also preparing a very nice song, I am sure it will be a national success,” she said.
Manuel Sanz assures that he feels valued as a musician, since Amaya Hermanos gives him all the facilities to continue with his personal project. “They are helping me grow, giving me the opportunity to work on my solo career. One has to pursue one’s dream, quite apart from growing up with an orchestra. I was also given the opportunity to travel to other countries, such as Colombia and Mexico. The special thing about these concerts is that there were no Peruvians. It makes me happy to know that a Peruvian artist can touch the hearts of other people, from other countries. The beautiful thing about music is that it opens doors for you,” he concludes.
