Kylian Mbappe said he was proud to leave Paris Saint-Germain with his “head held high” after the capital team won the French Cup on Saturday, noting that he was waiting for the right time to confirm his next destination.
“Ending the season with the title in the final, there is no better way,” Mbappe told reporters after his team’s 2-1 victory over Lyon in the final, which was held in Lille, northern France. “It feels really good.”
Mbappe’s contract expires at the end of this season, and he has previously officially confirmed his departure from the team, as Spanish club Real Madrid is expected to be his next destination, although no official confirmation has been issued by the two parties.
“All I wanted was to finish things well with my team and get a title,” he said. “I believe there is a time for everything and I will announce my future club at the appropriate time.”
He continued, “I think it will be within a few days, so there is no problem.”
“I don’t know when yet,” added Mbappe, who will join his country’s national team to play in the European Cup. “There are still some details (unresolved) but the most important thing is to finish the season on a high level here.”
Although Mbappe did not score in Saturday’s match, he leaves his hometown team with a record of 256 goals in 308 matches.
He added, “There are only good memories, and now I can go out with my head held high, and with a new title as well, so I will only remember the positives.”
The 25-year-old said about the idea that he played his last match in a Saint-Germain shirt, “With the protocol before the cup final, you have a lot of waiting and therefore there is a lot of time to think, and the last thing a footballer needs to do is think.”
He noted, “You think, and so all the memories start coming back. There is all the nostalgia, and the idea that everything will be over in 90 minutes. It was difficult but very fun at the same time.”
