KKR vs SRH | Russell’s class blended with Venky-Gurbaz domination silences Sunrisers as KKR crowned IPL 2024 champions

Kolkata Knight Riders won their third IPL title beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets. The Orange Army looked poor with their batting with no substantial partnerships and succumbing to just 113 runs whereas Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer sealed the game for KKR in 10.3 overs.

‌Brief Scores: KKR:114/2 [Venkatesh: 52, Gurbaz:39; Shahbaz 2.3-0–22-1] beat SRH: 113  [Cummins: 24, Markram: 20;  Russell: 2.3-0-19-3]  by eight wickets.

A packed Chepauk adorned with a sea of purple and orange, infused even more energy into the IPL final clash between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Kolkata Knight Riders. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Pat Cummins’ decision proved ill-fated for the Orange Army. Mitchell Starc’s dual strikes and Vaibhav Arora’s dismissal of Travis Head left the Sunrisers reeling at 40/3 by the end of the powerplay. The woes compounded for Hyderabad as Nitish Kumar Reddy, Aiden Markram, and Shahbaz Ahmed fell within the 12th over, leaving them struggling at 72/6. The Kolkata bowling unit appeared formidable, with Andre Russell making a significant impact by claiming the wicket of Abdul Samad. In the 13th over, Pat Cummins strode to the crease joining forces with Heinrich Klaasen in a bid to salvage a respectable total for the Sunrisers, who found themselves reeling at 90/7 after 14 overs. Unfortunately, things kept favouring the purple army when the Proteas star was dismissed by Harshit Rana in the 15th over. With Cummins and Jaydev Unadkat at the crease, the Sunrisers managed to reach the 100-run mark in the 17th over. However, their batting could not progress much further, as the Sunrisers succumbed to a total of 113 runs, marking the lowest score in an IPL final.

The Kolkata Knight Riders endured a shaky start when Sunil Narine departed in just the second over. However, Venkatesh Iyer and Rahmanullah Gurbaz quickly steadied the ship, propelling the Knight Riders to 46/1 within four overs. Despite the Sunrisers’ best efforts, the duo continued to dominate, driving KKR to an impressive 72/1 by the end of the powerplay. With a mere 42 runs needed off 14 overs, the crowd erupted into chants of “KKR,” sensing victory on the horizon. Although Gurbaz fell in the ninth over, it hardly dented their chase as Venkatesh Iyer blazed his way to a blistering 24-ball fifty. The left-hander wasted no time as he steered Kolkata to victory in the 11th over, securing an emphatic eight-wicket win. With this triumph, the Kolkata Knight Riders clinched their third IPL title, cementing their status as champions of IPL 2024.
