However, after the demise of both Khanderao and Malharrao, their son Malerao proved unfit to rule, leaving Ahilyabai bereaved.

Gangoba Tatya, among them, summoned Raghunath Rao, Peshwa Madhavrao’s uncle, to attack Maheshwar. Seeking aid, Ahilyabai turned to loyal commanders Mahadji Shinde and Tukoji Holkar, who dispatched their forces to Maheshwar.
