“Rohit Sharma is a very experienced captain,” Ricky Ponting praises Indian Captain’s brilliance

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, has been lauded for his leadership skills by Ricky Ponting, a former Australian cricketer and two-time ODI World Cup-winning captain. This praise came after India’s thrilling six-run victory over Pakistan in the T20 World Cup 2024.

Rohit Sharma’s brilliance against Pakistan

In the match against Pakistan, Rohit Sharma’s strategic decisions were crucial in defending a low total of 119 runs. His understanding of his bowlers, many of whom he has captained in the IPL, was evident in the way he used them effectively during the match. Bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya stood out with their performances, restricting Pakistan to 113 runs for the loss of 7 wickets.

Ricky Ponting pointed out that Rohit Sharma’s prior experience from franchise cricket came in handy for the Indian team in this tense match. He praised Rohit Sharma for his outstanding captaincy and said, “Rohit Sharma is a very experienced captain, isn’t he? And I just saw him then and said, mate, your captaincy today was outstanding. I don’t think he could have done much more.”

Ponting also noted that the wicket conditions changed during the second innings of the match. When the sun came out, the wicket dried very rapidly. Despite these changing conditions, Rohit Sharma was able to adapt and adjust his strategies on the run, which Ponting thought he did really well.

Rohit Sharma’s leadership extends beyond his strategic decisions on the field. He has been praised for his ability to instil confidence in his team. Before the match against Pakistan, he called on his team to step up and expressed confidence in their abilities. He particularly praised Virat Kohli for his experience and asked his team to step up for their marquee clash against Pakistan.

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy experience is not limited to international cricket. He has also led the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he has a winning record of 56.33%, second only to the legendary MS Dhoni. His experience in leading a team in high-pressure situations in the IPL has undoubtedly contributed to his success as a captain at the international level.
