The Indian cricket team’s journey in the T20 World Cup has been a rollercoaster ride. After securing three consecutive wins, the team has guaranteed its berth in the Super Eight stage. However, the team is set to undergo a significant change as reserves Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan are to be released after the final group league game against Ireland.
Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan to come back to India
Shubman Gill, a talented opener, and Avesh Khan, a promising speedster, were part of the Indian squad as travelling reserves. Their stay with the team was only up till the US leg of the competition. The decision to release Gill and Avesh was pre-decided, and it is believed that the team management doesn’t see the need to carry four standbys into the Super Eights stage.
The logic behind releasing Gill and Avesh is straightforward. In case of any injury concerns for either skipper Rohit Sharma or star batter Virat Kohli, the team has Yashasvi Jaiswal in the squad of 15, who can then come in. There is no requirement for a fourth opener during the Super Eights. Similarly, with the team already playing three front-line pacers along with Hardik Pandya, and a fifth medium pacer in Shivam Dube in case of absolute emergency, Avesh’s presence as a net bowler isn’t deemed necessary.
This implies that Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed, who are the remaining members of the travelling reserves for Team India, will continue with the main squad. Rinku Singh, a designated finisher, and left-arm fast medium Khaleel Ahmed will accompany the team during the Caribbean leg of the tournament.
