David Wiese announces retirement from International Cricket following defeat to England in ICC World T20

David Wiese retired from international cricket following Namibia’s loss to England in Antigua. Wiese began his career representing South Africa in 2013 before transitioning to Namibia in 2021 where he played a big role in their historic journey to the Super 12 stage during the 2021 ICC World T20.

‌A thunderous round of applause reverberated throughout the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua as David Wiese walked back to the pavilion after being dismissed by Jofra Archer on Saturday. The 39-year-old acknowledged the crowd by raising his bat in acknowledgement. Upon reaching the dugout, he was greeted with pats on the back from his Namibian teammates, while a few English players extended their handshakes in a display of sportsmanship and Wiese’s cricketing journey.

In the post-match press conference, the Namibian star said, “The next year’s T20 World Cup is still two years away, I’m 39 years old now, so in terms of international cricket, I don’t know if there’s much left in me. I still like to play the game for a couple more years, I feel like I’ve still got a lot to contribute and a lot to play. But I just feel like what better place to end a special career for me with Namibia”.

I’ve had a lot of good times with them and to play my last game for them possibly at a World Cup against a world-class team like England, it just seemed like the right time.”

David Wiese’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious 11-year international cricket career. He debuted in T20Is for South Africa against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2013 and later made his ODI debut against New Zealand at Centurion in 2015.

In the latter part of his career, Wiese switched his allegiance to Namibia. During his time with Namibia, he played nine ODIs, scoring 228 runs and also claimed six wickets. In T20Is for Namibia, Wiese featured in 34 matches, capturing 35 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 6.98. He also showcased his batting skills in the shortest format, accumulating 589 runs at a strike rate of 137.30.

Wiese has garnered extensive experience in numerous T20 leagues, showcasing his talent across various franchises. Notably, he made significant contributions while playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Joburg Super Kings over his career.
