Pakistan got knocked out of T20 World Cup: On expected lines, the USA vs Ireland match in Lauderhill, Florida, on June 14 has been washed out due to rain. Both teams earned one point each. This meant that the USA, who now have five points, have sealed their spot in the Super 8 stage, while Pakistan, who can get to a maximum of four points, have been eliminated from the race to the next round, along with Canada and Ireland.
The rain gods didn’t listen to the prayers of the Pakistan team and their fans, who needed Ireland to win this game. However, there was very little chance of this game ending with a result.
There had been a ‘life-threatening’ warning of storms and heavy rain showers in Florida this week. There are three consecutive matches here, and all three of them are expected to be washed out. Not only the rain but also the water making the ground damp has made it untenable and risky to play.
This is a huge result in the context of the tournament. Pakistan are the runners-up and semi-finalists of the last two T20 World Cups and are one of the biggest cricket teams in the world, with a passionate fan following. So their failure to reach even the Super 8 stage over a team like the USA, who is playing for the first time in the T20 World Cup and had qualified directly for this tournament by virtue of being co-hosts, is a huge result.
The ICC, though, perhaps wouldn’t mind this outcome considering their aim of piquing interest in cricket among the USA public, given that Los Angeles will be hosting the Olympic Games in 2028, where cricket will be played.
Coming to this tournament, Pakistan have only themselves to blame. They scored only 159 against the USA and then lost it to them in the Super Over. Against India, they failed to chase down 120 despite, at one point, needing 48 runs in 48 balls with 8 wickets in hand. A victory over Canada couldn’t and shouldn’t be taken as any salvation, and the Pakistani fans won’t either.
Nonetheless, Twitter was filled with all sorts of reactions as Pakistan got eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024.
