“There’s a reason why I’m in the team” – Jonny Bairstow slams critics after an important innings against Namibia at the 2024 T20 World Cup

England’s veteran wicketkeeper-batter, Jonny Bairstow, has faced his fair share of criticism because of his recent drop in form. However, after a rain-affected game against Namibia in the T20 World Cup 2024, Bairstow had a powerful message for his detractors.

In that match, Bairstow played a crucial cameo, scoring 31 off just 18 balls. His innings, coupled with Harry Brook’s blazing 47 (20), helped England post a challenging total of 122 runs in their 10 overs. Namibia fell comfortably short of the revised target (84/3), and England secured the victory.

Jonny Bairstow, Responding to Doubts

Speaking to reporters after the game, Bairstow addressed questions about his spot in the XI. He confidently stated, “It’s not the first time that people have had a go at me, is it? So yeah, you take it on the chin, and you crack on. But look, at the end of the day, there’s a reason why I’ve played for so long, and there’s a reason why I’m in the team.”

Adapting to New Roles

Bairstow’s middle-order role in the T20 World Cup raised eyebrows, as he is arguably at his best as an opener. However, he emphasized his adaptability, saying, “You go out there and perform in the positions that you’re asked to do so. That partnership in the middle there, like I said, after losing two early wickets, was imperative. If Harry and I can bat for a period of time through the middle, there’s going to be some decent scores.”

A Testament to Abilities

Bairstow’s long-standing presence in international cricket speaks volumes about his abilities. He isn’t shy about giving it back to critics when needed, and his performance against Namibia reinforced his value to the team.
