Exploring the Stave Falls Powerhouse
A National Historic Site of Canada, Stave Falls Powerhouse, was once B.C.’s biggest hydroelectric power source and is now a museum.

Stave Falls Dam
There are three dams on the site, a blind slough dam, intake dam and main dam. Stave Lake was created by these dams.
Stave Falls Powerhouse Tour
Tours are offered at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and Statutory holidays. Please arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled tour.
Stave Dam Interpretive Hike
The Stave Dam Interpretive Hike takes you on a steep trail through the forest to see impressive views at the summit. On a clear day, see all the way to Vancouver Island. The 1.6 km trail is not an easy hike and will take about 20-30 minutes to reach the top. Be cautious with children and pets. There are steep drop offs at the top. Go early in the day as parking fills up fast.

Is the Stave Falls Powerhouse Haunted?
There is something spooky going on at Stave Falls Powerhouse. According to a news release by BC Hydro, visitors to the dam sometimes say they hear the haunting sounds of a dog barking. Powerhouse tour guides claim hearing doors slamming shut and sounds of footsteps when the building is empty. They have also reported hearing their name being called.
Why a dog’s bark? BC Hydro said, “it’s thought to be the ghost of a pup that belonged to two men who died when their boat capsized while navigating Stave Lake”.
BC Hydro says two other B.C. dam locations, Ruskin Dam and Buntzen Powerhouse experience paranormal activities.
Can you swim in Stave Lake?
Stave Lake is a man-made reservoir formed during the construction of the Stave Lake Powerhouse in 1928. The lake offers a variety of recreational opportunities. There is a boat launch and docks. Swimming is allowed but use caution as there are no lifeguards. Sandy beach areas are not accessible unless you have a boat.
