Rohit Sharma Becomes Most Successful T20I Captain

Rohit Sharma Becomes Most Successful T20I Captain: Indian national cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has surpassed Pakistan’s skipper Babar Azam to become the most successful captain ever in T20I cricket.

Rohit is currently leading India in the 2024 T20 World Cup. The team has been undefeated in this competition.

After winning all their matches in the group stage (except the washout against Canada), which included a close win over arch-rivals Pakistan, the Men in Blue defeated Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Australia in the Super 8. India then exacted revenge for the 2022 T20 World Cup by thrashing England in the semi-finals and will now face South Africa in the final of the competition.

With seven wins in this tournament, Sharma has now secured 49 wins as the captain of the Indian national team. Before the semi-final win against England, Babar Azam held the record with 48 wins as Pakistan captain.

Rohit’s record becomes even more impressive as the 37-year-old has won 49 out of 61 matches he has captained India with a win percentage of 79, which is the second-highest among captains who have led a national team in more than 20 matches. The first on that list is for Afghanistan captain Asghar Afghan, who played most of his matches against associate nations.

Rohit Sharma took the lead in this chart because of how much India has won in this T20 World Cup as compared to Pakistan. While Babar Azam only led Pakistan to two wins as the team crashed out in the group stage, India has dominated the competition and has been undefeated so far.

But Sharma is not only leading the team with his leadership but is also the team’s highest run-getter in this competition. He has scored three 50s so far and has scored 248 runs in seven innings. In India’s two most recent matches, he scored a brilliant 92-off-41 in the Super 8 against Australia and then scored a stable 57-off-39 in the semi-final against England.

Rohit Sharma became the most successful Indian T20I captain when he led the team to victory in their first group game against Ireland. That win took him past MS Dhoni, who has led India to 41 wins in 72 matches.

The third long-term Indian captain, Virat Kohli, is India’s third-most successful T20I captain with 30 wins in 50 matches.

With eyes on the final against South Africa, if India wins that game, not only will it be the team’s first ICC trophy in 11 years, but it will also make Rohit Sharma the first captain to win 50 games in T20Is. Speaking about the team’s preparations for the final, Rohit had this to say:

“I thought of a target in my mind but never shared it with anyone. They’re instinctive players, and I wanted them to go out and play freely without thinking about the ideal par score. We batted well, understood the conditions, and ultimately reached a strong total of 170, which I felt was an excellent score on that pitch. Then our bowlers put on a superb performance.”

India will take on South Africa in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup on Saturday, June 29, at 8:00 PM (IST) in Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.
