How to Start Rainwater Harvesting? Save 1 Lakh Litres With a Simple Setup

As India faces an acute water crisis, here’s how you can do your bit by setting up a simple and affordable rainwater harvesting system at home to reduce your water usage by 30%.

As India faces an acute water scarcity crisis, rainwater harvesting emerges as a crucial and sustainable solution. From groundwater recharge to energy and water conservation, the benefits are immense, including significantly lower water bills.

Despite the advantages, many people hesitate to collect rainwater due to perceived high capital costs. But what if there was an affordable and efficient way to gather and utilise rainfall from roofs?

Remarkably, with an investment of just Rs 10,000, you can save up to 1 lakh litres of water!

For a simple rainwater harvesting system, all you require is a plastic bottle, a pipe, a drum, and a pump.

Firstly, divert rainwater from your terrace into a drum in the most economical way using a basic cloth filter that will eliminate big impurities. Then, transfer the collected water into the overhead tank using a portable pump to keep the water clean.

It is important to note that rainwater should only be collected after the first rain of the season, as the initial rainwater is contaminated with dust and residues washed out from the air.

Reusing rainwater for domestic tasks can slash water usage by 30 percent. This approach can be extremely useful in a country that enjoys three to four months of consistent rainfall but faces a looming water crisis with reducing groundwater levels.

Collective efforts by citizens to implement such simple rainwater harvesting systems can make a significant impact.
